New York, The Big Apple
The city of New York is often called New York City (or NYC) as to not confuse it with the state of New York. Anyways, New York, New York has more languages spoken there than any other place in the world. Mostly due to it being the place where most people immigrate from other countries.
Well Known
Even if you’ve never been there in person you’ve probably seen New York many times on television. One of the most popular events of the year is the New Year’s Eve countdown in Times Square.
- Fun Fact: The first Ball Drop was made to replace the usual pyrotechnics show that took place for New Years’ celebrations since it was deemed too dangerous to do in such a crowded place. It was allegedly designed to mimic a ball that would drop each noon at the Western Union Building.
Traveling New York
The levels start to get a bit more difficult as you come across tricky Obstacles like the pinata which can only be removed with Power-ups. However, don’t let that stop you from trekking throughout the city to meet the Locals and discover all the Wonders that NYC has to offer.
- Strategy: As you traverse through New York, take a moment to scan the board before you start making matches and removing tiles. There could be tricky Obstacles hiding in the corner that you need to remove to complete the level easier.
- Example: Level 177 there is a Bolt stuck in the lower right corner by a Chained red tile. Remove the Chain and swap those two tiles to clear the Portal on the left side of the board! Alternatively, you can use a Hammer to remove the red tile blocking the Portal! 😉
Speaking of Portals, one of the tips mentioned in the Tips to Travel Crush guide mentions starting at the bottom of the board when making matches. Since there are quite a few Portals in New York, it’s even more important to step back and analyze each level to see just exactly where the bottom is.
Detour with Locals, New York Edition
Most of the Levels that end in 5 will have a bonus Detour with Locals Level and some of the Parisian Locals are here to visit! Drop all of their Souvenirs to the bottom to complete the level and go along your way!
- TIP: Don’t forget to interact with the Tripstagram posts to get your rewards every 8 hours!
Here are the Locals you will meet in New York:
Pepper, the Chef
Fauna, the Naturalist
Coach, the Athlete
Henri, the Artiste
Andy Warhol, the Artist
Pepsi, the Popstar
Haute, the Fashionista
Scarlett Johansson, Movie Star
Interesting Tidbit: As a child, Scarlett Johansson used to stare at herself in the mirror until she made herself cry. What an unusual way to train to be an actress!
Wonders of New York
Every 10th Level in New York is a Wonder! Visit these amazing places and to complete that level you’ll need to drop Souvenirs to the bottom of the board. Now, it’s time to restore those Wonders, but to do that you need to replay levels on Hard to gather Silver stars and Super Hard to gather Gold stars. Then, you can either wait out the timer or use Gems to speed up the Wonder restoration process.
These are the Wonders of New York:

What’s in the City of New York Levels?
Along with the Obstacles that you see in the city of Paris, you’ll come across some new items intended to make Travel Crush a bit more interesting! Along with the more difficult Double Bolted Crates we saw before, you’ll also see:
- TIP: ‘Nearby’ or ‘near’ means that one of the matched tiles has to be touching the Obstacle.
Bricks with Dynamite
- Set off the Dynamite and remove the Bricks by clearing the number of tiles indicated on the ticker. However, only the tiles that are the same color as the tape holding up the Dynamite will be counted!
- The Bricks with Dynamite are stationary and can ONLY be removed with the tiles indicated. Not even Power-ups are strong enough to blast through these walls!
Double Chain
- While the Chains that premiered in Paris required only 1 nearby match to clear, these Double Chains will need 2 matches to unlock both Chains.
- Chained and Double Chained tiles will not move from their spot until they are unlocked.
Flies
See Uncle Toad
Pinata
- These are the first new Obstacles in New York and they are extra tricky! Only Rockets, Bombs, or a Combo Power-up can clear them from the board. Even Bolts are useless unless matched with a Rocket or Bomb.
- Pinatas can be swapped with a tile to make a match and will fall to fill the space below.
Thick Grass
- Hopefully, you’re not tired of mowing grass because the dark green Thick Grass needs 2 matches on them to clear them. The first match will turn it into Grass, which is a lighter green which we saw in Paris.
- Tiles will be on top of all Grass and is just a part of the tile.
Tornado
- Just like the natural variety, these Tornadoes move haphazardly around the board with every move, leaving destruction in its wake. Since there’s no way to remove Tornadoes, you’ll have to work around them and the messy broken tiles they leave behind. But don’t worry, the broken tiles will be repaired and useful again.
- Tornadoes will move on their own and can’t be moved by moving tiles.
Uncle Toad
- These overindulgent Toads will burp up Flies when you make a match nearby. If you don’t have the game sounds turned on, it’s worth it to hear them snoozing! Power-ups can also be used to encourage them to cough up a Fly or 2.
- Uncle Toad cannot be moved but will go away when they’ve given up all the Flies in their bellies.
Walls
- Yellow lines on the board can only mean one thing: WALLS! While you can make matches with the tiles on the other side of a Wall, you won’t be able to swap tiles across it. The best way to deal with Walls on a level would be to use Power-ups since they will traverse through them to clear tiles on the other side.
- Walls are thick, yellow lines and will stay in place throughout the level.
- There are even more Obstacles found in the Guide to Obstacles in Travel Crush! Find out more ways to defeat the ones you find in New York and more.
Secret Tip for Events
Events that require you to match certain colored tiles will be easier to do in a level that has fewer tiles to choose from. This means starting that level with a Bolt would be even MORE effective. Although you will need to complete the level to get credit for the matched tiles.
Bonus:
- This trick also works for making Power-ups if the event requires those for points since fewer colors available means more patterns will show up. 😉
Cons:
- Each level can only be replayed twice, so save them for events like these.
